He made his first theatrical film appearance by playing the role of Ashok Chand Thakur, sarpanch’s son, in the 1994 biographical film, Bandit Queen, which is based on the life of Phoolan Dev who was a bandit and later became a member of parliament.
Gajraj Rao directed the short video titled Rorito: Write the New in 2016.
He has been a founding member of the Delhi based theater group named Act One.
He portrayed the character of Jeetendra Kaushik aka Jeetu, Nakul’s father, in the 2018 Hindi-language comedy-drama film, Badhaai Ho, in which he co-starred alongside Ayushmann Khurrana, Neena Gupta, Surekha Sikri, and Sanya Malhotra. For this role, Gajraj Rao won the 25th Screen Award in the “Best Actor (Critics)” category as well as the 2019 Filmfare Award in the “Best Supporting Actor” category.
He was included in the lead cast alongside Ayushmann Khurrana,Jitendra Kumar, and Neena Gupta for the 2020 Hindi-language romantic comedy film, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, in which he appeared as Shankar Tripathi.
As a producer, he has worked on projects like The Tribal Scoop and Budhia Singh: Born to Run.
